Saga of the Crocus

A modern epic poem, set in 1840s’ Europe –
Where war is recent, and magic is feared –
Where ambition flares, and injustice lives –
What warmth will thaw their cold world?
A retelling of Frozen unlike any other.

Ever since Frozen II (2019) came out, I have been working on an epic poem about the events of Frozen (2013) and Frozen II (2019). It combines elements from the Broadway Musical and the shorts, for a hopefully more sensible story.

The idea was first seeded in me when I watched the Musical in early 2019. It was darker, more adult than the film (Frozen (2013)), and it inspired me to write a tribute poem to Elsa. Then I remembered reading of someone who had written Star Wars in an epic poetry style – one detail that stood out was that he let Yoda speak in haiku, to parallel his Yoda-speak in the movies. (It is by Ian Doescher: https://iandoescher.com//william-shakespeares-star-wars/)

Well guess what? I do have a passing interest in epic poetry (because I’m studying old languages), and Frozen…well it wasn’t really epic-worthy, maybe a novel?…until I saw Frozen II. Say what you will about the plot, I think it feels just like a myth. There’s magic, and prophecy, and spirits, and no real reason to quest other than Fate’s demanding it. Sounds just like Odysseus returning to Ithaca – a rough journey plagued by the wrath of the gods, which he prevails in.

Of course, I’m not saying Frozen II is equal to Odyssey. I’m just saying I see parallels between them. Therefore I made an epic poem about it:

The Saga of the Crocus. In whose name, I hope not to sully the great literary tradition left behind by the early Icelanders.

Enjoy!

I’m still waiting for someone to write the Old Norse eddic version of this story. If anyone does, let me know please.

(Fun fact: the book in the picture was a gift from a friend to encourage me to keep writing my saga. And the feather quill was carved by me.)
