Countinuing with a commemoration for Frozen (2013)!
On 19 Nov 2019, Frozen premiered worldwide, so today marks seven years since the first screening of Frozen. Seven years! We have all come a long way since then…we ‘all look a little bit older’ indeed…
Check out the second moon above, designed for Anna, the protagonist of Frozen.

The Design of the Moon
The colours have a little more meaning in this moon. The moon background was previously red, the same red as the red in the logo of the blog. It was red because it was meant to contrast with the logo (you’ll see why soon!) but it seemed too…angry. So I changed it to green, to symbolise Anna’s reign of plenty. The blue crescent represents the fjord that Arnadalr is on.
The two sloping shapes on the left and right of the moon represent a valley (a delle), and the tower shape in the centre represents the city. The tower looks more like a clock tower than one of the castle’s towers, mostly because I remember it much better than the castle itself. The clock tower features prominently in at least 3 Frozen films: in ‘Love Is An Open Door’ (Frozen), in the final scene of Frozen Fever (2015), and in some shots of the town during ‘Some Things Never Change’ (Frozen II). Also, the effect of the circle on the tower suggests light, which is how I view Anna – a light in troubled times. She is like a small sun – an inheritance from the Northaldra (the people of the sun) maybe??
The wheat symbols on the left and right are more symbols of Anna’s bountiful rule. And anyway, the wheat is one of Anna’s motifs in the film. Read more about that here.
In the background, there is a very goofy-looking eagle. Why? Because Arendelle: Aren– = eagle, -delle = dale/valley. The eagle and slopes together ‘spell’ Arendelle. If I had to stretch the interpretation further, the eagle’s wings are spread in a protective fashion – this symbolises that the dale protects itself – extending the interpretation, the dale is united and everyone works together.
Also in the background we have a branch (I hope it is an olive branch) and a sceptre. The branch represents peace, and the sceptre represents the rule of the Crocus throne. The three background images build up the meaning that Anna is the protector of a united dale, but that she is peaceful, and that she is the legitimate ruler of Arnadalr. (fylgi!!!! she deserves it)
Lastly, there seems to be a straight line running down the centre of the circle again, but this time with a diagonal line going crosswise. That is the Younger Futhark rune ᛅ (Ár). The word ár means ‘year’, but it also means ‘harvest’, or ‘plenty’ – exactly what Anna represents as Queen. And, of course, if I wrote Anna’s name in runes, it would be ᛅᚾᛅ (ANA) – starting with Ár.
Everything in the moon refers back to the autumn/harvest/plenty theme in Frozen II rather than the themes in Frozen. I would say that the designs of Frozen focuses more on Elsa’s ice, what with the ice castle, the world-ending winter, etc. – even though Anna is the protagonist. Meanwhile, Frozen II‘s design evokes a sense of maturity, which better reflects Anna’s development into queen than Elsa’s discovery of her true place in the world.

Frozen was a worldwide hit, but with the benefit of comparison to Frozen II, the movie seems a little…immature? The themes aren’t as dark, or political. Even compared to the Broadway musical, the movie is much lighter in tone. After seven years, I can’t really take the first movie that seriously anymore.
But I remember why I became a Frozen fan in the first place – the sibling dynamic. The mutual self-sacrifice of two tragic sisters, one chasing, one fleeing, all for their love of one another. It was inspiring (no matter how much my friends tell me siblings don’t really do that). The ‘immaturity’ of the movie only happens with the benefit of hindsight. And that comparison is what allows me to appreciate the ‘darkness’ of Frozen II better.
I am still looking forward to great things for Anna and Elsa.
Fylgi!
