Commemoration Month: Frozen II (2019)

Click on this link to read my first post EVER about my thoughts on Frozen II!

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long silence. School has been exceptionally busy and since most of my posts are long and a little deep, I haven’t had the heart to sit down and look at my blog. The second part on Iðunn’s letter has gone unwritten for like 3 months, I know.

But it is November now, and it’s time for some commemoration. These will just be a series of short posts going through the month, and since the school term is coming to a close, I intend to finally finish that post on the hidden message.

Starting with a commemoration for Frozen II (2019)!

On 7 Nov 2019, Frozen II premiered, so today marks one year since the first screening of Frozen II.

The image above is a little graphic I made, commemorating Elsa, the protagonist of Frozen II.

Incidentally, my first ever Frozen-related post was my review of Frozen II. Click here to check it out!

The Design of the Moon

The background circle in the image is my own design. I call it a ‘moon’, and the following is an explanation and description of it.

The colours were somewhat arbitrary. Mostly I was going for a light bluish colour, in line with Elsa’s theme of ice.

The big icicle in the background, and the smaller, bluer icicle shape, are more obvious representations of Elsa’s ice powers.

But also obvious the image of a butterfly’s wings – these signify Elsa’s final metamorphosis into her true form: a guardian of the disadvantaged and oppressed, a seeker of truth, and true inheritor of her mother’s legacy (which is tied to the wind spirit –> air –> butterfly. Yeah, I’m stretching this too far).

The four diamond shapes on the right seem to form a chain leading to a four-pointed star – this is a representation of Elsa’s affinity with the spirits of Air, Earth, Water, and Fire (each given a distinct colour) and Knowledge (the star; more analysis here).

Lastly, there seems to be a straight line running down the centre of the circle. That is the Younger Futhark rune ᛁ (Íss, meaning ‘ice’ in Old Norse). The rune has two meanings:

  1. It is a reference to Elsa’s ice powers (again, duh).
  2. If I were to write Elsa’s name in runes, it would probably be ᛁᛚᛋᛅ (ILSA) – which starts with the Íss rune.
butterfly, butterfly, in your love i cannot die

Frozen II may have had weaker reviews than its predecessor, but its mythical tone and magical worldbuilding was a major inspiration for my Saga of the Crocus (find it here!) It leaves more questions than it answers, since the filmmakers admitted that they had not sorted out all the plotlines in the many years before the release. But that is not necessarily a bad thing – it just means that more answers can be resolved in Frozen 3, and it means that Frozen 3 could truly outdo both its predecessors.

I am looking forward to great things for Anna and Elsa.

Fylgi!
