Fanmade: 如釋冰 (文言文/Classical Chinese) [Let It Go]

This is perhaps one of the coolest fan-made versions of ‘Let It Go’ I have seen.

Basically, the creator translated ‘Let It Go’ into Classical Chinese – a thoroughly impressive feat considering no one uses Classical Chinese on a daily basis anymore – and it sounds and feels much better than any of the contemporary Chinese versions (People’s Republic of China dub, Taiwan dub, Hong Kong Cantonese dub). The vocals might be lacking Idina Menzel’s punch, and the pronunciation of some words might not be ‘standard’ at least where I’m from, but this is an awesome, elegant rendition anyway. The cultural knowledge needed to understand this song is quite immense – frankly, any translation into English would never do these lyrics justice. And anyway, I don’t have the necessary cultural knowledge.

But I’ll try. Enjoy!

Original Lyrics

Translation by blog author

Unceasing frost, a white night, the sun has set, living things far depart
Alone my shadow roams by the freezing river
The illusory city within the mountains stands alone
I am sovereign of ice and snow, on a barren mountain

The wind slashes like a thousand blades, the cold roars for a thousand years; only these remain to comfort me
It is as if my body is cast upon the high seas, and only my blood/death will save my kingdom now

Don’t approach, don’t probe, for the dark shadow still looms
I always uphold the protocols, but my heart remains benevolent
My past is inconstant and gives no advice, so my present is directionless
In that case, I’m done talking about this

I am like the wind, I stay and go where I please
I am a majestic swan, and I shall no longer be a captive
I am like a rainbow, I am as immense as the sky
I shall watch the violent waves year after year
Say no more, I shall not bow and scrape to you anymore
A gale tears apart the falling flurries
But I alone dare to brave the freezing flows

As I laugh, the distant chimney smoke fades into nothing, and the houses seem like ants
Those times are past; no more will innumerable fears manipulate me

Now that days are available to me, what shall I do?
Using my power, I shall amaze heaven and earth
What is right, what is wrong, none of these matter now
I do as I please

I am like the wind, I stay and go where I please
The tempestuous heavens are not caused by the weather
I am like a rainbow, I am as immense as the sky
Sunshine always follows right after storms and rain
I command a frozen palace as I draw my towers upon the ground
Fearless of the desolate wind

I have the power to raise a thousand tons, my energy fills the ground, my ice is breathtaking
As my soul stirs, pearl fractals and frost spring and rise, heavy as spidersilk or light as cotton
Flowery crystals and profoundly beautiful arcs reveal my efflorescent mind; behold, marvel at my celestial palace
As I cast a look back on my past, I ask what for I should stubbornly cling to it?

I am like the wind, I stay and go where I please
I would that I become a sun and harry the demons of the night
I am like a rainbow, I am as immense as the sky
In such a short time, the old me has vanished completely
I command a frozen palace, and we stand proudly facing the sun
A gale tears apart the falling flurries
But I alone dare to brave the freezing flows

  1. This is really beautiful, thanks for the translation. It’s amazing how much of the song’s essence was brought across in so much more depth through classical chinese.
Makes me realise how universal the themes are in Frozen, along with its stunningly gorgeous nature imageries.
